Archery Elk Hunting Methods

Montana trophy elk hunting, archery hunts and rifle hunts for Pope and Young class bull elk.

After breakfast and a cup of hot coffee or favorite beverage we will head out into the crisp fall morning air. We will start the day with calf or cow calls and some bugling depending on which gets the best response. This is the start of the rut, and when things happen, they happen fast! We will position the hunter and guide in the best location for the anticipated path of the responding bull and let the magic happen.

In the afternoons, we usually set up inside of a Double-Bull ground blind over well used watering holes and wallows. These locations draw in the elk during the warm afternoons after fending off rival satellite bulls and rounding up cows. Bring your video camera because there is a lot to see that you will want to share with your friends when you return home.

Terrain and your physical conditioning

New Mexico terrain is very forgiving as compared to Colorado and other states. It has rolling hills, pine parks and juniper country side. We will glass this country side and find elk, mule deer and an abundance of other wildlife from the hill tops and vistas. The elevations are typically 7,000 to 8,000 feet with temperatures ranging from 25 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Anyone in fair physical condition will find these hunts comfortable and enjoyable.

New Mexico Archery Season

1st Archery Hunt - This hunt occurs in early September and the weather can be be warm. This is the pre-rut and watering holes and wallows are very active during this time. If you like to hunt from a blind or tree stand, this is the hunt for you.

2nd Archery Hunt - This hunt occurs during mid September and the season's first cold fronts begin to bring in cool weather. The bulls are on the move trying to locate cows, establish their herds while they scream at other bulls in the area. When we locate a single bull during this period, the potential for calling him into bow range is very high. This heart pounding hunt is exciting and productive.

3rd Archery Hunt - This hunt occurs in late September and the bulls are now in full rut. The bulls that have cows will scream obscenities to the rival bulls who are trying to take the cows away. Fights occur between the bulls. During this period a cow call can attract love sick bull who would rather make love than fight a herd bull. After a day of bugling, fighting and chasing other elk, bulls often head to their watering holes or wallows to cool off during the afternoons. Our skilled guides know exactly what to do and how to do it when a situation presents itself.
